Card Expired

The credit card used is no longer valid due to expiration.

Definition

What does "card expired" mean?

Card expired is a hard decline code returned when the credit or debit card used for a subscription payment has passed its expiration date. The card number may still be associated with the customer's account, but the issuer will not authorize transactions on expired credentials.

Why cards expire and subscriptions fail

Cards typically expire every 3–5 years. When they do, the issuing bank sends a replacement with a new expiration date and sometimes a new card number. If the merchant's stored payment credentials are not updated, the next billing attempt will return a card_expired decline.

This is one of the most preventable causes of involuntary churn. The customer still has an active bank account and wants to keep their subscription — the only issue is that the stored card data is outdated.

Prevention and recovery

The best defense is proactive: card account updaters from Visa and Mastercard automatically refresh stored credentials when a replacement card is issued. Network tokens go a step further by staying valid even when the underlying card number changes.

If a card_expired decline does occur, the appropriate response is to notify the customer promptly with a payment update prompt. Retrying the same expired card will not succeed — the customer must provide new card details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I retry a card_expired decline?

No. Card expired is a hard decline. Retrying the same expired card will not succeed. Instead, use a card account updater to refresh the stored credentials or notify the customer to update their payment method.

How can I prevent card expired declines?

Enroll in Visa Account Updater and Mastercard Automatic Billing Updater to automatically refresh stored card details when replacements are issued. Network tokens also stay valid through card replacements.

How common are card expired declines in subscription billing?

They are one of the most common decline types. With cards expiring every 3–5 years, a significant portion of your subscriber base will have their cards replaced in any given year, creating ongoing decline risk without updater coverage.
