What does "invalid card number" mean?

Invalid card number is a hard decline indicating the card number provided does not correspond to any existing account in the card network's system. The number may have been entered incorrectly, may belong to a canceled account, or may have been generated erroneously.

Why it happens in subscription billing

For recurring charges, invalid card number declines are less common than for initial purchases because the card was validated during signup. When they do occur on a recurring charge, it usually means the card account has been closed entirely (not just reissued), or there was a data migration error in the billing system.

Recovery approach

This is a hard decline — retrying will not succeed. The only path to recovery is customer notification. Send a clear payment update prompt asking the customer to provide a new, valid payment method. If a backup payment method is on file, attempt that first before contacting the customer.
